This series delves into the whale skull's surface in its untouched purity, reimagining its textures and forms as expansive scenery. Inspired by renowned sculptor David Ruben Piqtoukun, this series honours traditional Inuit materials while reinterpreting them through a lens with respect. Pivotal to this exploration is the profound spirit and aura emanating from a whale skull over 500 years old, housed in David’s studio ready to be transformed into sculpture. Untold hours were spent in awe of the skull, tracing its curves, textures, and silent stories. Its weathered surface seems to hold whispers of ancient waters, embodying a quiet power that invites reflection and reverence. This immersive experience with the awe inspiring whale skull became both a meditation and a dialogue, forging a deep connection between witness and subject.
